Course Summary

Do you enjoy exploring the relationship between language and identity? Are you looking at studying VCE English Language? Year 10 Pre-English Language replaces the General English (Year 10) subject. This subject gives you a strong foundation and broader perspective for future English Language studies and pathways. The subject equips you with the skills, knowledge and rigour to analyse how the language we speak and write shapes how others perceive us and is shaped by its intended function, audience and context. Students will begin to develop and establish the high-level critical and creative thinking, controlled use of syntax and lexical choices in written expression, analysing the purpose and function encoded in text and explore the social values and beliefs that shape the use of language.

Students undertaking Pre-English Language should be aware of the necessary independent reading and drafting required of this subject.

Learning Activities & Assessment

  • Identify and describe key linguistic concepts as they relate to the nature and function of human language
  • Explore and use the subsystems of language to analyse the structure and function of English Language
  • Use key concepts and metalanguage to identify and describe language use in an objective and systematic way through spoken and written Australian texts
  • Identify and describe types of language acquisition in the context of linguistic theories
  • Students will develop their analytical thinking and writing skills through formative and summative assessment, including opportunities to conduct research into linguistics

Course Summary

Do you enjoy Maths? Are you looking at studying Math Methods or Specialist Maths? Year 10 Pre-Methods replaces the Standard Maths (Year 10). This subject gives you a strong foundation and a broader perspective for future mathematical studies and pathways. The subject is aimed to equip you with tackling rigorous mathematical problems and applying mathematical concepts across areas including linear algebra, quadratics, trigonometry and statistics. Students will also begin to develop their ability to use the Mathematica software. All students who select Year 10 Pre-Methods will need to undertake an assessment of their prior learning.

Learning Activities & Assessment

  • Rigorous exploration of key mathematical concepts and application of key skills
  • Apply mathematical concepts through the completion of problem-solving tasks
  • Use of technology to explore and solve mathematical problems
  • Essential Assessment will be used throughout the semester to measure student’s growth
  • Students will be assessed on an end of semester exam with topic assessments and assignments spread throughout the semester

Course Summary

Do you enjoy analysing texts and their meaning? Are you looking at studying VCE Literature? Year 10 Pre-Literature replaces the General English (Year 10) subject. This subject gives you a strong foundation and broader perspective for future literature studies and pathways. The subject equips you with the skills, knowledge and rigour to analyse the construction of literary texts, how authors establish meaning within their texts and expressing your interpretation of these texts. Students will begin to develop and establish the high-level literacy skills required to perform well in VCE Literature, expanding in their communication and critical thinking skills as well as establishing a broader world view for their future pathways.

Students undertaking Pre-Literature should be aware of the necessary independent reading and drafting required of this subject.

Learning Activities & Assessment

  • Rigorous exploration of key literary concepts, principles and the application of literary analysis
  • Apply literary concepts through the completion of close analysis of texts and written draft responses and interpretations
  • Use of literary perspectives and metalanguage to explore interpretations of literary texts
  • Annotation and drafting will be used throughout the subject to measure student’s growth
  • Students will develop their literary analytical thinking and writing skills through formative and summative assessment
