Course Summary

VCE Japanese Second Language (Units 1–4) builds on approximately 200 hours of prior study, developing students’ skills in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication. Students explore themes — The Individual; The Japanese-speaking Communities; The World Around Us — while mastering hiragana, katakana, 200 prescribed kanji, and increasingly complex grammar structures.

VCE: Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 & 4 sequence available

Goals

• Communicate confidently in spoken and written Japanese
• Understand the relationship between language and culture
• Compare Japanese and English linguistic systems
• Reflect on identity within multilingual communities
• Prepare for School-assessed Coursework and end-of-year oral/written exams

• Spoken exchanges: conversations, role-plays, negotiations
• Interpretive tasks combining written, spoken and viewed texts
• Written responses: emails, blogs, articles, reflective writing
• Oral presentations on cultural products and practices
• Unit 4 persuasive/evaluative writing on contemporary issues
• Interviews and extended discussions to build exam readiness
