Course Summary
Do you enjoy exploring the relationship between language and identity? Are you looking at studying VCE English Language? Year 10 Pre-English Language replaces the General English (Year 10) subject. This subject gives you a strong foundation and broader perspective for future English Language studies and pathways. The subject equips you with the skills, knowledge and rigour to analyse how the language we speak and write shapes how others perceive us and is shaped by its intended function, audience and context. Students will begin to develop and establish the high-level critical and creative thinking, controlled use of syntax and lexical choices in written expression, analysing the purpose and function encoded in text and explore the social values and beliefs that shape the use of language.
Students undertaking Pre-English Language should be aware of the necessary independent reading and drafting required of this subject.
Learning Activities & Assessment
- Identify and describe key linguistic concepts as they relate to the nature and function of human language
- Explore and use the subsystems of language to analyse the structure and function of English Language
- Use key concepts and metalanguage to identify and describe language use in an objective and systematic way through spoken and written Australian texts
- Identify and describe types of language acquisition in the context of linguistic theories
- Students will develop their analytical thinking and writing skills through formative and summative assessment, including opportunities to conduct research into linguistics
