Course Summary

This subject is a project-based unit recommended for students intending to undertake VET Automotive with a focus on the automotive industry. Students will develop knowledge and practical skills in workplace health and safety (WHS), the correct and safe use of hand tools and selected power tools and understanding of vehicle principles and parts identification. 

The major assessment task is the design A vehicle of the future. They will look at what the purpose and application is for their design. 

Learning Activities & Assessment

Students will complete a range of practical and theory-based tasks, including: 

  • Pull apart and reassemble small engine  
  • Investigation, design, production, and evaluation of a customised Vehicle of the future  
  • Completion of a written and computer-based portfolio assignment documenting the design and construction process  

Assessment will focus on safe workshop practices, accuracy of engine reassembly, design development, problem-solving, and project evaluation.

Course Summary

Open to all students, with no prior skills or experience required. This course provides students with strong foundation skills and knowledge, preparing them for a successful transition into a VET course in Year 11. 

Students train in a real salon environment right here at WSSC while learning practical industry skills including shampooing, blow-drying, styling, colouring, braiding, thermal styling, and client communication. Students also gain experience using salon tools safely, working as part of a team, managing time, and understanding how a professional salon operates day to day. 

This course goes beyond hairstyling by exploring fashion trends, sustainability, salon branding, social media, customer service, and salon business concepts through fun practical workshops, creative projects, and industry-style challenges.

  • Blow-wave and styling, Curling and straightening workshops  
  • Braiding and creative styling challenges, hair-up and festival hair design activities 
  • Hair colouring & salon role-play and client consultation scenarios

Course Summary

In Year 10 Photography, you will explore how photographic artworks can communicate ideas, emotions and viewpoints. You will develop practical skills using digital cameras, including focus, exposure, lighting, composition and image selection. You will investigate photographic artworks by different creators and learn from the ways photographers plan, capture, edit and present their work. 

You will also use Photoshop to enhance, manipulate and refine images, while digitally documenting the development of your own photographic artworks. This subject is a good choice if you are interested in creative image-making, photography, visual expression and digital editing. It provides a foundation for future study in VCE Media, Visual Communication Design and Art Creative Practice.

Do you love being creative, experimenting with ideas and making things that express who you are? In Visual Arts, you’ll be encouraged to explore ideas, themes and artistic influences while developing your understanding of composition. You will develop your artistic practice through experimentation with materials, techniques and processes, while documenting and refining your ideas. 

You will have the opportunity to create artworks that communicate personal viewpoints and respond to a range of social, cultural and contemporary issues. You will present and evaluate your artworks and reflect on your creative decisions as well as the ways artists communicate meaning to different audiences.

Course Summary

Design is everywhere. From what you wear, the things you use, and the information you read. Students in Visual Communication and Design investigate the needs of different target audiences and create images using the ‘Design Process’. We look at the four ‘Fields of Design’ and use a range of drawing materials and digital computer programs to investigate sections of the Design Process. Students will reflect and critique their own work and investigate past and present designers from different times and cultures. What’s the difference between Visual Arts and Visual Communication and Design you ask? In Viscom the focus is that you design for a purpose or to meet the needs of a brief, compared to Art which is about exploring creative materials and developing original artwork based on your personal thoughts and feelings. What does Visual Communication and Design lead to: Architecture Fashion design, Posters and Advertising, Logo development, App and Website design.

  • Investigate and report on designs from across times and cultures.

Drama gives you the opportunity to create, perform and respond to theatrical works. You will explore creating self-devised theatre using different forms and styles.  

Throughout this course you will create, refine and present performances. Develop skills in acting using costume, make up and props to make your work pop. You are likely to build confidence in using expressive skills, including voice, movement, gesture and facial expression, as well as performance skills such as focus, timing, energy and audience engagement. 

Drama encourages creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. Learn how to shape stories, communicate ideas and create meaning for an audience. Explore performance styles from different cultures, places and times, and see what you can borrow to make your own performances.  

You even get to go to a live theatre show to pick up a few ideas.

Course Summary

Are you interested in how music is made, performed, and shared? Do you want to develop your own sound as a solo or group musician? Studying Year 10 Music helps you build practical performance, songwriting, and listening skills. You will learn how to practise effectively, explore different styles of music, and create your own original tracks. This subject prepares you directly for senior music pathways by focusing on three main areas: performing, analysing, and creating. It is recommended that students learn a musical instrument through the WSSC Instrumental Music Program or from private tutors.

Learning Activities & Assessment

  • Performing: Rehearse on your chosen instrument or voice, build your confidence, and perform live for an audience. You will also maintain a practice journal to track your rehearsal progress, reflect on your improvement, and meet your performance goals. 
  • Analysing: Listen to a wide variety of musical styles to learn how songs are structured and put together, developing your overall listening skills and musicianship. 
  • Creating: Use music software and instruments to compose, arrange, shape, and record your own original musical pieces.

Throughout this course you will plan, develop and present performances. Develop skills in acting and production, use lighting, sound, props, costume and make-up to create amazing performances. You could also build confidence in using expressive skills, including voice, movement, gesture and facial expression, as well as performance skills such as focus, timing, energy and how to get people to pay attention to you.  

Theatre encourages creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. You will learn how to shape stories, communicate ideas and create meaning for an audience. You get to explore performance styles from different cultures, places and times, and consider how these traditions can inspire contemporary performance. 

You even get to go to a live theatre show to pick up a few ideas.

Year 10 Health Education is all about helping you navigate the real world, make smart health choices, and take control of your own health & wellbeing. In this course, you will dive into the issues that matter most to young people today. This includes building safe, respectful relationships and understanding consent, building mental fitness and managing stress, and appropriate youth nutrition. You will learn how to question online trends, spot fake health advice, and get hands-on safety skills for dealing with risky real-world situations.  

Health Education is about giving you the practical life skills and confidence to handle the pressures of senior high school and make informed decisions for yourself and your friends. This subject is a pathway for students to identify what supports their own interests whether it be Human Development &/or VET Health Assistance (Units 1-4).
